Walter E. Disney— opening day July 17, 1955
Disneyland Park is known as the "Happiest Place on Earth" and since its debut has set the standard for which all other theme parks are judged. The park is laid out with eight themed "lands" spreading out from a Central Plaza, also referred to as the Hub, with the iconic Sleeping Beauty Castle standing at the center.
Upon entering Disneyland you'll take a stroll down Main Street U.S.A., a recreation of a typical Midwest town from the early 20th century and the main walkway leads to the Central Plaza and the park's lands – Fantasyland, Tomorrowland, Frontierland, Adventureland, New Orleans Square, Critter Country, Mickey's Toontown, and Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge.
Standing at the center of the park is Sleeping Beauty Castle that serves as the hub of the park and entryway to the most famous land of all– Fantasyland. Here attractions based on classic story tales from everyone's youth come to life. Many of the attractions are dark rides with stories based on Disney animated films like Peter Pan, Snow White, Alice in Wonderland and Pinocchio. Other popular Fantasyland attractions include the King Arthur Carousel, Storybook Land Canal Boats, Mad Tea Party spinning teacups, it's a small world and Dumbo the Flying Elephant.
The land is also home to the first of Disney's many mountain-based attractions – Matterhorn Bobsleds. Here you'll board a bobsled for a thrilling roller coaster journey down the slopes of a 1/100th scale replica of the famous Swiss mountain.
More attractions based on mountains at Disneyland Park are Space Mountain in Tomorrowland, Splash Mountain in Critter Country and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad in Frontierland.
Other favorites include the Indiana Jones Adventure, Jungle Cruise, Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion, Star Tours, Roger Rabbit's Car Toon Spin, Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage, Astro Orbitor, Autopia and Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters.
When Disneyland Park opened in 1955 guests paid a nominal fee to enter the park and purchased coupon books with lettered coupons to participate in the attractions. The coupons were lettered from A to E and with A coupons good for smaller rides and attractions and E coupons good for the most thrilling and thus was coined the term the "E-Ticket Ride". Today, admission to the park is one-price with all rides, shows and attractions, except arcades included.
Besides rides and attractions the park is also known for its extensive entertainment. Parades featuring the Disney characters are presented at least once daily on the parade route and on weekends, holidays and peak-periods the park presents elaborate firework displays and the nighttime spectacular Fantasmic! on the Rivers of America.
Disneyland Park also hosts seasonal events with decorations, entertainment, and special attraction offerings during Halloween and the Christmas holidays.
