Valencia, CA -- Six Flags Magic Mountain in Los Angeles... sets the record straight. Despite an announcement last week by Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio -- claiming to capture the roller coaster world record for height and speed, Six Flags Magic Mountain still dominates both categories with Superman The Escape -- the world's tallest and fastest coaster according to the Guinness Book of World Records.
Towering an awesome 415-feet above earth and shattering the 100 mph speed barrier, Superman The Escape has appeared in countless National publications such as the New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and USA Today as the tallest and fastest steel rollercoaster in the world.
Debuting in 1997, Superman The Escape is the most technologically advanced ride ever built utilizing a revolutionary prototype electro-magnetic acceleration system to blast riders up to 100 mph in just seven seconds. Superman The Escape has thrilled more than 5 million riders over the past two years.
"This industry is all about setting records and Six Flags has always been at the forefront," said Jim Blackie, vice president of engineering maintenance for Six Flags Magic Mountain. "It took nearly 400 years to shatter the 100 mph barrier. Superman The Escape set the industry on fire with its record-breaking dimensions. Reaching these types of feats in our industry is monumental, we're not going to let this record go without a fight!"
"When the New York Times asked me to rank America's coasters, SUPERMAN THE ESCAPE was definitely my number one," said Paul Ruben, North American Editor of Park World Magazine and noted roller coaster historian. "If you enjoy going high and fast, Superman The Escape is hard to beat!"
Superman The Escape endures as a favorite among Six Flags' record breaking mega-coaster arsenal including The Riddler's Revenge -- the world's tallest, fastest stand-up coaster; Viper -- still the world's tallest looping coaster, Ninja -- the West Coast's fastest suspended roller coaster; Colossus -- the tallest woodie in the West; Revolution -- the world's first 360-degree looping roller coaster; and more.
