Chain Lift Fails On Cedar Point's Corkscrew

Sandusky, OH -- The chain on the Corkscrew roller coaster at Cedar Point broke last Thursday night forcing the park to close the attraction until Saturday.

According to park officials the chain broke at approximately 6:40 p.m. while a train was climbing the 85-foot tall lift hill. Twenty-four passengers had to be evacuated from the train and were forced end their ride early by walking down the stairs next to the lift.

The 400-foot long chain broke as a result of metal fatigue, according to Janice Lifke, public relations manager for Cedar Point.

Fortunately, no one was injured in incident. A few guests were unfortunately sprayed with oil as a result of the chain breaking and were offered new clothes compliments of the park.

The Corkscrew roller coaster features an 85-foot tall lift hill, three inversions and a top speed of 48 mph. According to Cedar Point 44.5 million riders have ridden the attraction since it opened in 1976.
