Superman First-Rider Event To Honor Hometown Heroes

Largo, MD -- In May of 2000, one of the world's tallest and fastest mega-coasters, Superman Ride Of Steel, will take flight in the Washington/Baltimore area. Six Flags America is in search of "Hometown Heroes" to take part in welcoming the World's Greatest superhero attraction to Maryland's only theme park. The park is joined in this effort by the Washington/Baltimore Regional 2012 Coalition, a U.S. Bid City for the 2012 Olympic Games.

Individuals are invited to submit written nominations for their own personal hero or someone whom they consider a hero for today. Twenty winning entries will be selected to be among the first official riders to take to the sky on Superman Ride Of Steel during the official ride opening this spring at Six Flags America. One Grand Prize winner will receive a trip for four to San Antonio, Texas to experience the new floorless roller coaster, Superman Krypton Coaster at Six Flags Fiesta Texas.

The Washington/Baltimore 2012 Coalition and a number of local Olympic athletes are taking part in the "Hometown Hero" program, bringing the Olympic movement and the heroism of sport closer to our community. "Heroes come in all shapes and sizes, from every walk of life. Taking part in the Hometown Hero program with Six Flags America gives us the opportunity to show kids and adults what tremendous accomplishments can be attained with a dream and dedication," states Dan Knise, President and CEO of the Washington/Baltimore 2012 Coalition.

"We are thrilled to be working with the Washington/Baltimore 2012 Coalition, honoring our US athletes and giving aspiring achievers a chance to meet Olympic heroes," said Janet Porter, Six Flags America Vice President and General Manager."Introducing Superman Ride of Steel has provided Six Flags America with a perfect occasion to honor local heroes and introduce them to other valiant citizens from our area. Plus, they can test their bravery by taking a mile-plus long ride, more than 20 stories in the air, on this ultra-fast steel coaster. And one lucky winner, along with their hero, will have the chance to further test their mettle on Superman Krypton Coaster at Six Flags Fiesta Texas."

All interested parties are invited to write an essay nominating their own personal hero or someone in the community whom they consider a hero. Typewritten nominations of 500 words or less must be received by April 25, 2000. Name, address and telephone number of the person submitting the nomination, along with the name and address of their hero, must be included.

Nominations should be mailed to Six Flags America Hometown Heroes, P.O. Box 4265, Largo, MD 20775. Winners will be notified by May 5, 2000. For more information, check the Special Events section of the Six Flags America Web site at www.sixflags.com/america.
