Mean Streak gets *The Axe*
Video on their page shows that Mean Streak is getting *The Axe* Sept 16th.
Ride it while you can.
What do you think it means, Total removal and replacement or RMC?
I don't see them making another 20 million plus investment in that Structure that RMC would be.
Who knows. I also don't see whatever the replacement is, Being ready for 2017 Way too late a closing. They'll probably close it, Pull it down this fall and start new in the spring for 18.
Cedar Point is hosting an event on September 16th. They also posted a new POV video today on YouTube.
Farewell, Mean Streak. I won't be able to make it out before September.

The only thing I will miss is that amazing view as you climb the lift hill. Wish they could have returned it to how it was when it was new. In its current condition, I'm not terribly upset. Wish we weren't losing another wooden coaster, but I totally understand why they made this decision. Planning on going to Cedar Point next week. Maybe I get some information of what's in store for that area.
I rode it while workers were still climbing around the structure new. While there were a couple more thrilling spots. (Both Drops near the RR Tracks had good air. The ride was still largely rampy and boring.
I returned later that first year and thought my brain stem was detached it shook so bad on that first drop. The next time I rode it, It was braked on the first drop. First RR track drop lowered and reprofilled and largely the boring ride it became.
It was a POS from the moment it was build, Was supposed to be some type of record breaking Texas Giant clone, The problem was Texas Giant was actually very good when maintained.
An RMC upgrade, I don't know.. Cedar Point with only one wooden coaster definitely does not sound good..

My wife and I along with our son since he was 15 months old, had a great family tradition of staying at Lighthouse Point in May for a few days. Every year for almost 14 years, and we would always request a cabin in the low numbers or by the pool just so we would be in Mean Streaks shadow, and hear the screams (pain or joy!) from the screeching trains.
It was a beautiful coaster, still is for now. We missed out the other day, just didn't happen. I hope they have something on the 16th of Sept, I'd sure love to be there for it..

I think so much more was expected of it because of it's immense size. It had it's good days and bad... just so we would be in Mean Streaks shadow, and hear the screams (pain or joy!) from the screeching trains. It was a beautiful coaster, still is for now...
First time I took my family to CP in 1999 we were so impresses by the looks of Mean Streak. We knew nothing about it at the time. Standing in line (!) with the queue being right in the middle of that massive structure and hearing the riders screams. We expected something like the Beast.
Then some time later we finally boarded and halfway down the first drop it came to a crawl. We were like, WHAT? Then drop after drop the ride seemed to moan and groan. Finally the agonizing slow ride came to an end. My wife was chatting with someone who told her that some years earlier someone broken their neck on it, hence the terrible braking. I don't know if that is true or not. We haven't ridden it since. AND GOOD RIDDANCE! Valuable real estate there being eaten up by what is little more than a piece of art.
That was the year they were starting construction of Millennium, which would later become our favorite ride in the park. But on that trip, even Magnum seemed to us to be over rated. We left the park after two days all agreeing that Mantis, Wildcat and Disaster Transport were most enjoyable rides. RIP to all three of them.

^As fairly smooth as Mean Streak is now, it just is kind of bland. I'd rather get a mid-large GCI woodie at CP (115-130 range, maybe like Wodan.) Or even a smaller one.
I agree. I never understood the immense hate for the ride or people saying that it's "rough." It's too sluggish and over-braked now to be rough. It was a lot of fun when it first opened though.
I love coasters, and the loss of one is not something I see to celebrate.
I guess it's where you sit, and if you know! :) (for both coasters!)

The most ironic thing to me is this, yes MS was just a bit rough, but no where near as rough as Voyage. That thing was the most uncomfortable, cant wait to get off, awful shaking, bouncing coaster ever. Mean Streak was glass smooth compared to Voyage.

Funny you should say that. I love wooden coasters, and The Voyage was one that I couldn't wait to ride. However, it was the first wood coaster I actually thought "I can't wait to get off, when is this going to end?"
And I like The Voyage, but at some point during the ride, it just feels like a marathon that I'm in no shape to complete.

From what I understand, The Voyage has good years and bad years, and it's usually much better earlier in the year. I've ridden The Voyage in 2007, 2009, 2012, and 2015. I've always had great rides on The Voyage. Each time there has been a bad spot or 2, but I always been able to ride it in back seat over and over again. Holiday World tries to maintain it, but due to its size and the wear the train put on the track, it's a never ending project. There's a reason they could never get Timberline trains to run on it. I believe everyone who says it was a rough experience. I think I'm just fortunate enough to ride it in its good years.
Voyage was a great ride in 2006 and even better in 2007 when a few rough spots were evened out. Very intense and demanding of the rider. You definitely had to ride it defensively or it would bruise your ribcage, but I was able to marathon a dozen or so rides in a row.
Then in 2008 it began to get a little rough. No surprise, given the stress the trains undoubtedly put on the tracks and structure. By the next time I rode it again in 2010 it was definitely too rought to marathon, but I still got six rides or so comfortably. That was just before Will's passing.
When we returned in subsequent years (2012 and 2015 as I recall) it was definitely a "one ride only" coaster. Even my son called it quits after one ride. That's unfortunate, but it is undeniable. I think they tried to push the envelope and the envelope just burst.

For me there is a difference between being rough (painful) and intense. Mean Streak when I rode it many years ago was rough. The Boss at SFStL right now is very very rough. Not a fun ride at all.
On the other hand I found Voyage a couple of years ago, and Gwazi at BGT to be intense, but not painful. The old Texas Giant I would put in the same category, along with Legend. Fast and furious, tossing around, but going with a flow, not painfully where you feel like you're getting smashed, jerked or shaken to death.
I love intense, but not rough.
I guess what I found funny over the years was how rough folks think MS is, and I find many other coasters much rougher. Yet MeanSqeaker always gets the bad talk.. hahah
It's all good, my poor old Meansqeaker... :) bring on the future technology I'm ok with that too!

Rob you expected something like the Beast and you got a braked first hill and an agonizing slow ride? Sounds exactly like the Beast to me! :) :) :)

Yeah, those mag brakes certainly changed the ride. IIRC that was early 2000's maybe? I remember suddenly one year Drop Zone displaced the Beast as my favorite ride in the park.
I gotcha on the grins though. Based on the first two drops it would just be another so-so older woodie. Fortunately Beast still lets loose in the back stretch after the brake shed and the helix is still pretty intense. OTOH Mean Streak just crawls along for the entire course.
Soak City gets a fancy new slide where the go-karts were, and RMC takes care of MS. Both for 2017.
Owwwwww!!

Would have been a cool marketing campaign for Hallow Weekends!!
I'm a "fan" of if it isn't there it doesn't exist, and how can you talk up something that doesn't exist. *
In this case, that just means not fully RMC'd, but still, it isn't, so it doesn't.
* I know, I know, we do it all the time after announcements of future installations. But without an announcement...and on and on...
