Coney Update: Cyclone Retracking

I was mistakened and went to Coney this past Sat thinking Astroland would be open (as it opened the last weekend in March last year). Only Deno's Kiddieland and WonderWheel was open, and of course the B&B carousel.

The rest of the rides open this Sat.

Cyclone has gotten even more trackwork- specifically the small little hump known as drop 8 (visible from the sidewalk)- the entire hump is of brand new wood- structure and track. Workmen were up near the first fan turn hammering the structure- why I don't know- maybe just to make noise and to let the GP know that it does get offseason work.

Last year Cyclone ran better than I can ever remember- after its larger drop valleys were retracked. It will only be better this year, so if you're near NYC, make the trek to Coney to experience the mother of all coasters.

P.S.- Nathan's was great!

Thanks for the Coney update. It's been 7 long years since I last rode the Cyclone, so I'm looking forward to taking my kids out there to ride it this year. I might even drag them on that insane contraption, the Wonder Wheel. Is there anything else out there worth riding?

DO NOT MISS:

B&B Carousel- across Surf Ave in a storefront, this classic Mangels/Carmel carousel is Coney's last antique carousel, where over two dozen once operated. Although none are brass, the ride has a ring dispenser, which requires a bit more skill than Knoebel's- the ride rotates at a very fast speed for a carousel, and the horses from which you can grab rings from are the up/down type, not stationary like Knoebel's. Great band organ, and a long 5-6 minute ride for only $2.00

Jumbo Jet- A classic Schwarzkopf production model similar to Lagoon's Jet Star 2. A VERY rare Schwarzkopf spiral lift speedracer.

if you're a spin/spew fan- do not miss Astroland's Breakdance- it's run like they do it in Germany during Octoberfest (perhaps Cal can elaborate).

Thanks for the tips. What's the pricing policy for Astroland now?

> for Astroland now?

Astroland offers a POP which is good for a session of about six hours (usually noon-6 and then 6-midnight). I think they may also have a third session sometimes mixed in there.

The POP costs about 14 bucks, and includes five rides on the Cyclone and unlimited rides on everything else in Astroland, not including the Go-Carts.

If you choose to pay as you go, here is a price guide as of last year:

Cyclone- $4 first ride, $3 each additional (if you stay on- no choice of seat unless it is available).

Astroland Major Rides- $3 for Log Flume, Enterprise, Pirate Ship, Music Express, Go-Carts and $2-$2.50 for everything else

Deno's Wonder Wheel Park- $3 for the four majors (Wonder Wheel, Bumper Cars, Looping Boat, Dark Ride) and $2 for all the kiddies (including the recently installed custom Miler coaster).

Independents- B&B Carousel- $2 Jumbo Jet- $3.50 1st ride, $2 each additional Eldorado Skooters- $3 first ride, $1 each additional

Plus, there are the various other flat rides and go cart tracks indpendently run- rides range from $2-$4 each.

Parking at meters is $.25 per half hour with a two hour limit, or on busy days anywhere between $5-$10 to park in a vender's parking lot/landfill.

The Jumbo Jet is cool...i posted a link of a few pics, including the jet, above. There's also a ton of flat rides, great for all ages...LOTS of kiddie rides...it's such a wonderfully weird Midway...gotta love it!
