The Phantom Menace - Good, Bad or Mediocre?
I was born in 1978, a year after the original Star Wars hit cinemas, so I grew up with those films. When The Phantom Menace came out, I had to go and see that too.
Despite fears that it wouldn't live up to those earlier chapters, with their great characters and charm, I was blown away by The Phantom Menace. It really took me to another world. The plot is extremely strong and it twists every minute. There is also a great bad guy. You really get the sense that Darth Maul is dangerous.
My favourite scene was when they were chased by huge, underwater creatures. You really have to see this on your biggest local screen with Dolby Digital. And that's another point, it was filmed in a very wide ratio (2.35:1 I'd guess), so a lot of effects were lost on the 4:3 pan 'n' scan version, notably when Darth Maul extends both sides of his lightsaber for the first time.
Oh well, I look forward to the DVD in October, which is meant to be spectacular!

I was born in '83, and I also grew up with these films as my father was a huge fan of them, and I never really did like them, I always thought they were actually pretty poor films, but Phantom Menace was another story, despite satan himself (Jar Jar) being in it, the movie had a great plot, great action, and was just overall a great movie.

I always thought the Star Wars Trilogy was good, especially The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi....and when i saw Phantom Menace it was pretty good, but kind of cheesey in some parts, and it was supposed to take place before the first Star Wars when it looked more futuristic, that was the biggest problem IMO.

I was born in 1975, but I didn't ever see episodes IV, V, or VI until about 3 years ago when a couple of friends strapped me down and forced me (literally)! I thought they were okay movies, but I still don't see what all the hype was about. I know I'll get slammed for that comment by any Star Wars fan.
Despite all of this I went and saw the Phantom Menace in the theater and enjoyed it thoroughly. Great effects and a lot of fun

I am a HUGE Star Wars fan. I didn't grow up with Eps. IV, V, & VI, as I was born in 86, but my dad is also a fan. He made me watch them when I was very little and they bored me to death, but just recently when they were released again on the big screen, I went to see them, and I was amazed. I guess I didn't understand them when I was younger.
I went to see TPM with very high hopes and expectations, and it just blew me away. It had great action sequences and a great storyline with plot twists mixed in here and there. It quickly became my favorite in the series. I also have very high expectations for AOTC(Ep2), and I'm almost positive that it will become my new favorite.
Despite what many people said about TPM, I am among the few that actually liked it. I agree it did have some cheesy scenes in it, and they could of done without Jar Jar, but hey, I'll take what they can give me!

J-man, Im like you in the fact that I am too young to have seen them when they came out, my father is a fan. I fell in love with star wars about 6 years ago. The first 3 are my 3 fav. movies of all time, I watch them often. I saw episode 1 and was dissapointed. I wasnt expecting much, but I got less than I expected from it. It was too cheesy. "Me-sa Jar Jar Binks!" Me-sa gonna barf. And it was not just the cheesy-ness. You could see they tried to make it not-as futuristic as the trilogy, but in some ways it was more futuristic. Not good. Anyway, I would give it 2 stars out of 5.
