d_n_s_u takes to the stage with sheet music in his hand...

"I would like to dedicate this year's (8th) d n s u carol concert to the state of the UK Amusement Park Industry and to the memory of The Cyclone at Southport..."

In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan,
Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone;
Snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow,
In the bleak midwinter, long ago.

Our God, Heaven cannot hold Him, nor earth sustain;
Heaven and earth shall flee away when He comes to reign.
In the bleak midwinter a stable place sufficed
The Lord God Almighty, Jesus Christ.

Enough for Him, whom cherubim, worship night and day,
Breastful of milk, and a mangerful of hay;
Enough for Him, whom angels fall before,
The ox and ass and camel which adore.

Angels and archangels may have gathered there,
Cherubim and seraphim thronged the air;
But His mother only, in her maiden bliss,
Worshipped the beloved with a kiss.

What can I give Him, poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb;
If I were a Wise Man, I would do my part;
Yet what I can I give Him: give my heart.

Words: Christina Rossetti, 1872; she wrote these words in response to a request from the magazine Scribner’s Monthly for a Christmas poem.

Music: Cranham, Gustav T. Holst, 1906

Fantastic as always Gary, i can't believe it's the 8th! Blimey we've been at it a long time now!

That really is a sad photo of the Cyclone, It wasn't the most historic of rides but it had the charm and character you can only get with age and can't replicate today with modern equivalents

It really was a good ride. I know I'm not just wearing rose-tinted spectacles - I remember it vividly.

It was one of three UK woodies that were totally smooth - the others being the "Roller Coasters" at BPB and Great Yarmouth (Megafobia was totally smooth too, but apparently not at the moment).

Charming, smooth and thrilling; there really was nothing wrong with it whatsoever. It wasn't perfect, but it was flawless.

"Watch out for drops 3, 5 and 7...!"

Graeme, wasn't it drop 7 that seemed to drop out from underneath you? I've seen on ride footage from Theme Park review, and from what I remembered, that drop just came out from nowhere.

That definitely is a heart breaking pic though.

Yep, basically. I'll happily take the opportunity to relive the Cyclone:

Drop 1 - large drop
High, slow turn

Drop 2 - biggest on ride
Drop 3 - camelback (mind the tree!)
Medium-height Turn

Drop 4
Drop 5 - camelback (mind the sign!)
Low turn (underneath highest)

Drop 6 - before Ghost Train
Drop 7 - inside Ghost Train

Actually, looking through the archives this is only the 6th Carol Concert this year!!?? There appear to be 2 missing from the archives / my brain..Who Cares?

Here's the boxset and note the In the Bleak Midwinter bias.. :-)

2002

d n s u walks up to microphone...

(cue loads of feedback)..some several seconds of silence followed by a carol....

(d n s u sings):

"In the bleak mid-winter
Frosty wind made moan.
Earth stood hard as iron
Water like a stone.
Snow fell on snow on snow
Snow on snow.
In the bleak mid-winter
Long ago."

Long unnerving drawn out silence followed by single hand clap from the back of the auditorium..

"Thank you" (d n s u bows then exits stage left.)

2003

(d_n_s_u walks onto stage from right and approaches microphone)

(Much feedback from microphone)

"One two..one two.."
(A few seconds silence and then d_n_s_u starts to sing:)
"In the bleak midwinter
Frosty wind made moan.
Earth stood hard as iron
Water like a stone.
Snow fell on snow on snow
Snow on snow.
In the bleak midwinter.."
(At this point a paper dart hits d_n_s_u on the nose..thrown from somebody presumably sitting at the back of the hall)
(A momentary interruption and then...)
"..Loooong ago..."
(Total silence followed by a solitary hand clap coming from somewhere...)
"Thank you..and Merry Christmas to all on The URC message boards..."

2004

d-n-s-u enters from stage right...)

THE ANNUAL d-n-s-u CAROL CONCERT!"

(Clears throat and screws up eyes at the sound of feedback from microphone..)

"1,2,1,2...That's better..

Before I start can I just remind all three of you in the auditorium NOT to throw things at me when I have finished singing..Thank you.."

(d_n_s_u commences to sing..)

Away in a manger
No crib for a bed
The little Lord Jesus
Lay down his sweet head..
The cattle...(Suddenly a trap door opens and d-n-s-u disappears down it.)

There is silence.

The three members of the audience stare at the empty stage..

..total silence.....

2005

Compare:
Ladies and gentleman: It's time for the annual d_n_s_u carol concert...

d_n_s_u enters centre stage from right and walks up to microphone..clears throat..stares at audience and begins to sing:

Silent night, holy night
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon Virgin Mother and Child
Holy Infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace...

..a scantily clad Blonde Babe complete with Father Christmas hat walks on at this point to lend a hand with the vocals..

The Duo sing together in close harmony:

Silent night, holy night!
Shepherds quake at the sight
Glories stream from heaven afar
Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia!
Christ, the Saviour is born
Christ, the Saviour is born...

For the first time in years the audience claps loudly...

2006.

.d n s u walks onto stage holding microphone..

"Breaking from tradition and in response to the two letters that have come flooding in, I am going to sing a more up to date modern Christmas song this year.."

..music starts up.. d n s u sings:

A ray of hope flickers in the sky
A tiny star lights up way up high
All across the land, dawns a brand new morn
This comes to pass when a child is born
A silent wish sails the seven seas
The winds of change whisper in the trees
And the walls of doubt crumble, tossed and torn
This comes to pass when a child is born
A rosy hue settles all around
You've got the feel you're on solid ground
For a spell or two, no-one seems forlorn
This comes to pass when a child is born
d n s u talks this bit:
And all of this happens because the world is waiting
Waiting for one child
Black, white, yellow, no-one knows
But a child that will grow up and turn tears to laughter
Hate to love, war to peace and everyone to everyone's neighbour
And misery and suffering will be words to be forgotten, forever

d n s u sings this bit:

It's all a dream, an illusion now
It must come true, sometime soon somehow
All across the land, dawns a brand new morn
This comes to pass when a child is born

d n s u finishes song and bows.

"..Thank you.."

7 seconds silence.

..Tomato hits d n s u on side of head.

(Tomato thrown from somewhere stage right)

(Stepping up to the mic, mainly to clean up the mess Gary made):

(Tim):
The song I am going to do is a roast, I'll be singing 'I Can't Decide' (Scissor Sisters)

It's not easy taking Grazza to the park,
Guessing on what he won't ride,
Especially if it's in the dark,
I could pull out all of my hair,
Standing in the Q for Stealthy,
Convincing him with some hot totti,

I know this sounds outRageous,
But I'm not that couRageous,
A bobsled makes me happy,
What more can I say?

(Chrous)
I can't decide,
Whether I should laugh or not,
I know I'm going to Hell for this,
Where I can sit and rot,
Oh come on now get in line,
You're really going to be fine,
Sit right there, push the bar down,
You're going for a ride.

It's a b!tch convincing Grazza to ride this,
I know it's not a Gerstlauer,
But it's truly worth the hour,
Just ride it once and I'll stop teasing,
I can always turn to our dear Fraser,
With his hairline that's receeding,

Oh it's just a rocket coaster,
Humour this old (Intamin) fanboy,
It'll soon be over,
And you'll see that ain't so bad...

(Chorus)

Oh I could have taken the high road,
And done a Chrimbo song instead,
But that's not really my style,
As you know this my friend,
So I have done summat low brow,
Loaded with lots of cheek,
Now I wait in line again...

(Chrous)

(Bows waiting to be pelted with more than just tomatoes)...

Oh, great, I've been "roasted" by a Man United fan...! Right, here's my riposte!

Dashing through the snow
On a giant Intamin
Over Cedar Point
Laughing at Grevin (ha, ha, ha!)
Praising mega coasters
Quoting Doctor Who
What about that B&M?
He really thinks they’re...ooh!

Timble Bells, Timble Bells
Timble all ahoy
Oh, what fun it is to be
An Intamin fanboy
Timble Bells, Timble Bells
Timble all ahoy
Oh, what fun it is to be
An Intamin fanboy!

A day or two ago
He thought he'd take a ride
With a giant Maple Leaf
Trailing by his side
Hands up all the way
And sucking on his thumb
Eating lots of choc and sweets
And kissing Fraser’s bum

Oh, Timble Bells, Timble Bells
Timble all ahoy
Oh, what fun it is to be
An Intamin fanboy
Timble Bells, Timble Bells
Timble all ahoy
Oh, what fun it is to be
An Intamin fanboy, yeah

Timble Bells, Timble Bells
Timble all ahoy
Oh, what fun it is to be
An Intamin fanboy
Timble Bells, Timble Bells
Timble all ahoy
Oh, what fun it is to be
An Int-a-min fanbooooooooy!

(Audience cheers.)

Thank you very much! So kind!
