Speculating about 2008 and 2009

With 2008 almost here, what are your semi-realistic hopes for the next two years?

Thanks to Southend, we should have one or two new rides next year. Also, I'm hoping that we see a planning application from Thorpe soon, so at least we can see their coaster being built during 2008.

It's too late for any big coasters in the UK, but dare we hope for some off-the-shelf designs?

Elsewhere, I hope Flamingo Land starts planning a woodie for 2009. I also think Alton Towers will prepare some sort of big ride for the same year.

Semi-realistic hope number one:

That 2008 becomes the year of "exciting announcements"

number two:

That we see NO MORE relocated and repackaged "as new" rides

number three:

That Amanada Thompson does nothing to destroy any more of her family legacy.

i've just read something about transforming the merrie england area at alton towers into a pirates style land, with the possibility of two new attractions being added with one a possible water coaster.also another hotel is being planned although the timeline for this is not certain.
maybe they are edging closer to a proper resort like disney,i know there are two hotels already but it's not quite there yet is it.

Semi-realistic.

Quasi-realistic.

What's the term for "1 in 10,000" type of realistic? ;)

The Pirate overlay of Merrie England is confirmed for 2008

The Facts
- tea cups re-themed as drunken barrels
- two new rides
- family focused

The Rumors
- Pirates 4D film for refurbished 3d cinema
- Zamperla rocking tug coaster (like the disc'o coasters but with the tug boat rather than the round disc)
- Splash Battle ride to replace Splash Karts
- Lego/Sealife tie-in attraction, like Atlantis (by SeaLife) at Legoland Billand

The Black Hole Eurofighter project seems to have dissapeared into outterspace!

Do you think either of those could be big (like Andy says, a water coaster), or are they more likely to be the two rumoured rides (Rocking Tug Coaster, Splash Battle)?

Sounds fun; something I'd want to try.

I'm not keen on these, but I wouldn't miss Splash Karts.

Can't say I'm sad. The sitdown looper/floorless to replace Corkscrew (spiritually; I don't mean in the same place) should be a B&M. :)

That really is a shame though, they could have put something great there. Regardless, if you want to really please Graeme, throw in a Bobsled. ;)

The planning application has been submitted for "Installation of new boat ride and ancillary structures at the boating lake" at Alton Towers

Council Planning File

So one of the 2 new rides is a Splash Battle then, wonder if it'll be a 3DBA (preston) or a Mack version

I expect the other one will indeed be the Rockin' Tug Coaster, then. Do you know if they are as big as Disk'O Coasters?

I wonder what they will do with the Flume? After all, it is bathtub themed. Pirate's Bathtime? ;)

I went on one of the behind the scenes tour recently ... which il post a full supply of reviews and pics later this week.
However i did ask about the pirate themed area ... hr couldn't ellaborate in detail .. (prob cos he has signed something so he cant actually do it)
However he did say that a major attraction would replace the ride that has the highest maintenace problems ... which they mentioned earlier as splash karts .... then he said:
"There are rumours online ... like you might have heard about things like splash battle" he then laughed as in he had said too much.

The tea cups will be replaced with barrels to tie in with the theme.
Apparantly the major attraction is the splash battle so i dont know what will be put in as the minor attraction.

In regards to the replacement of the black hole (by the way we did go in the tent ... huge tent!!) apparantely he said that they had one major rollercoaster to replace it which was very very close to go through ... but something came up and they scrapped the idea for now. The ride was supposed to be an interactive rollercoaster!?!?!

He then went on to say that they are limited to the space with the fact that a lift hill will have to go up gradually so they have tried to find something with a different style lift hill?!?!? Eurofighter anyone?!?!

They also thought about putting spinball whizzer in the tent because no one likes the location of it at the minute. But they would have to extend part of the tent in height.

Anyway ... i will post a review of the behind the scenes tour asap.

Brad

Wow, that's amazing, Brad.

Well, I suppose the Rockin' Tug Coaster could be considered "minor". They are only like a Rockin' Tug with an extra bump in the middle (like the Disk'O Coaster is a Disk'O with a bump in the middle).

I rode the Rockin' Tug at Southend and, to be honest, it was poor, but I'm sure kids will like it.

Disk'O Coaster = Disk'O + bunny hop
Rockin' Tug Coaster = Rockin' Tug + bunny hop

Hmm, the only way I can think you could make a roller coaster interactive is by choosing your soundtrack, like Hollywood Dream.

I suspect he meant that the Euro Fighter would have been the interactive coaster, and that they are now thinking of something else.

Hmm, that's a good idea, but instead of extending the tent, I'd just put it there in the open air.

Is it too late to get that proposed Schwarzkopf from the 90's? ;)

I hope so!

Not to speak ill of Schwarzkopf, but apparently it would have been difficult to operate, what with timing the dispatches so precisely.

As far as I'm aware, it would have been built behind Corkscrew, so, they still have the land...but if they build a coaster there, I'd like it to be a B&M, woodie or junior hypercoaster (terrain).

Yeah it was awesome ... i took plenty of pics.

By the way ... if you were wondering ... i was originally theflamingbrick ... but its been a while since ive been on here because i have been extremely busy persuing my career in the rollercoaster designing industry and they stopped my account.

If you have any questions about the tour i will be happy to reply ... but as i said i will post a review later

Yep, I knew you were flaming-brick and I remember you well. That's really cool if you're making progress in your career, seriously.

Am I the only one that thinks a Pirates theme is a bit old hat and pants???
Project penzance??? I was hoping for a Gilbert and Sullivan themed area. Now that would be fun.

I think the theme is timeless, but I also think there's a limit with what they can do.

What I'm most interested in is whether they will retheme the Log Flume. Will they turn it into a pirate adventure? I definitely think they should have a nude ladies bathing scene, like the German ones!

Re: Speculating about 2008 and 2009 by Corkscrew_Foley Corkscrew_Foley Profile at 9/24/07 9:59:13 AM

Indeed the Pirate's theme could be limited, but really, it's only as limited as the imagination is.

As for the Schwarzkopf, I was aware that it would have been too difficult Graeme, I just figured I'd bring it up, and thought maybe with today's technology, it would far more easier to run. :)

And budget and space. ;)

Merrie England is tiny, and they're not going to be able to pack in many "pirate adventures". Still, I'm optimistic!

Re: Speculating about 2008 and 2009 by Fraser Fraser Profile at 9/24/07 3:03:03 PM

Well I'm still hoping for a "Pirates of penzance" theme..
We could have "Mabel's Swinging Crinoline", Duelling coasters "Pirates vs Policemen" and a little meandering train ride called "The Poor Wand'ring One" etc etc

actually-we could have the porn version...Pirates of Mens pants...
