Park History
The original park of the Six Flags chain was founded by Angus G. Wynne in 1961. Inspired by the success of Disneyland, Wynne decided to build a theme park of his own. Planning for the park began in 1959 with Wynne and the Great Southwest Corporation leading the development. After an investment of $10 million and a year of construction Six Flags Over Texas officially opened to the public on August 5, 1961.
The "Six Flags" name comes from the six different nations' flags that have flown over the state of Texas - France, Mexico, Spain, The Republic of Texas, The Confederate States of America, and the United States of America.
