Park History
The origin of Six Flags Discovery Kingdom dates back to July 1968 when the park started as an oceanarium in Redwood Shores, California called "Marine World". Falling into bankruptcy, Marine World was purchased in 1972 and renamed "Marine World Africa USA" after merging with a failing animal park. Rising property values in Redwood Shores forced the park to look for a new home and in 1986 the park moved to a new facility in Vallejo, California.
The non-profit Marine World Foundation continued to operate the park until 1996 when they failed to make their debt payment to the city of Vallejo due to declining attendance. The city with few options foreclosed on the park and became the new owner.
After taking over the animal park, the city of Vallejo hired park operator Premier Parks in 1997 to manage and improve the facility. Premier Parks immediately started to add amusement rides and began to convert Marine World into a combination theme park and animal park.
Marine World eventually become a Six Flags theme park after operator Premier Parks acquired the chain of theme parks. In 1999, Marine World was re-branded and re-named Six Flags Marine World. In 2007, the park was again renamed Six Flags Discovery Kingdom to better represent the offerings at the park. Also, that year Six Flags announced that they would exercise their option to purchase the facility from the city of Vallejo.
