Park History

Six Flags Magic Mountain began as a partnership between Sea World and Newhall Land and Farming. The theme park was to become the entertainment anchor and was a planned portion of the development. Newhall Land and Farming wanted to build an attraction that would draw visitors up and over the hill from the San Fernando Valley.

Construction on the $25 million theme park began in January 1970 on a large plot of land in the newly formed town of Valencia. Magic Mountain opened to the public on May 29, 1971 with 33 attractions. Opening year admission was only $5 for adults and $3.50 for children.

Magic Mountain got off to a rough beginning. Several of the park's rides were not ready on opening day and park drew more crowds than it was designed to handle. After Thanksgiving, Magic Mountain closed for significant renovations.

On Memorial Day weekend 1972, Magic Mountain reopened with an additional $5 million spent on improvements and new attractions. During the winter additional landscaping was planned, the queues for Gold Rusher and Log Jammer lengthened to address their popularity and several new rides debuted. The Log Jammer was so popular the first year, that the park hired Arrow Dynamics to build a second flume ride on Magic Mountain's southwest slope. Jet Stream the world's first hydro flume opened just in time for the Fourth of July holiday.

In 1979, Newhall Land and Farming sold Magic Mountain to Six Flags for $51 million.

Over the years, Six Flags Magic Mountain has launched many record-breaking attractions. In 1976, the park opened Revolution the world's first modern steel roller coaster with a vertical loop. In 1978, the park opened the world's largest dual-track wooden roller coaster, Colossus. Again in 1997, the Six Flags Magic Mountain broke records with the opening of Superman The Escape, the first thrill ride ever in the Northern Hemisphere to break 100 mph.
