Lake Buena Vista, FL -- Walt Disney World confirmed last Thursday that the Disney-MGM Studios theme park will be renamed Disney's Hollywood Studios. The company said the new name will take effect in January.
"The new name reflects how the park has grown to represent the celebration of the entertainment that today's Hollywood has to offer -- in music, television, movies and theater.," said Meg Crofton, president of Walt Disney World Resort.
"Now we can say that Hollywood is literally our middle name," added Crofton.
The name change will also come just before the opening of several new attractions and shows. The new Toy Story Mania interactive 3-D dark ride based on the Disney-Pixar "Toy Story" animated films is currently under construction at both Disney-MGM Studios park in Orlando and Disney's California Adventure park in Anaheim.
Block Party Bash, a lively parade with the Disney-Pixar characters will be coming for Disney's California Adventure to debut at the studio park next year. Also, Disney is planning to open a new live musical show called Playhouse Disney Live on Stage featuring the characters from the Disney Channel shows.
Disney plans to also take advantage of the hype over High School Musical with a new live production based on "Disney High School Musical 2: School's Out!". The new production replaces "High School Musical Pep Rally" and will be performed on a moving state starting this fall.
Disney said the MGM studio name will continue to be used until the name change occurs in January.
