Kennywood Opens 108th Season With New Thrill Ride

West Mifflin, PA -- Kennywood amusement park begins its 108th season tomorrow and that means visitors to the Pennsylvania amusement park will have a couple of new attractions to try.

Kennywood Cosmic Chaos LogoThis year Kennywood is introducing Cosmic Chaos, a new "out of this world thrill ride" and SS Kenny, a family tugboat ride in the park's Kiddieland. Both are set to debut on the park's opening day, May 5.

Cosmic Chaos a ride called a "Mega Disk'O" by its manufacture Zamperla seats 24 people on a giant disk facing outward. Applying the ride's theme, the park is referring to this as a UFO.

"This ride is definitely the best new 'flat ride' we could purchase," states Kennywood Entertainment President, Pete McAneny. "The ride sensation is totally different than anything I've ever experienced."

Cosmic Chaos RideFrom a maximum height of 50 feet the spaceship begins its untamed flight along 120-foot concave track while the riders spin around in a circle on the disk.

"Just when you think you've seen everything, something completely different arrives. It also has a novel seat design that seats riders on a motorcycle-like pedestal seat with a back restraint," said McAneny. "Arms and legs are free from restraint and the rider looks outward, creating quite a visual impact for both riders and those who are content to simply observe."

Cosmic Chaos features a UFO theme - thanks to both its manufacture Zamperla and to Kennywood Team Members.

The name and theme for the ride were decided in-house. Immediately after the park decided to purchase the Mega Disk'O, Kennywood ride supervisors started to brainstorm names and possible themes.

After deciding the "disk" looked like a UFO, everyone went to work creating concepts relating to an outer space theme. Matt Earnes, Kennywood's lead Phantom Fright Nights make-up artist, provided alien concepts and a contest among team numbers resulted in the name for the ride.

Out of 38 entries submitted, Mike Kostich in the Rides Maintenance Department submitted the winning name, Cosmic Chaos.

Zamperla internationally known for adding one-of-a-kind themes to its rides was then tasked by Kennywood to apply the theme to this ride.

Cosmic Chaos is not the first ride at Kennywood from Zamperla. Guests already rave about Aero 360 and the Garfield Pounce Bounce in Kiddieland. This year's new Kiddieland ride, SS Kenny is also another one of their rides.

Kennywood opens to the public on Saturday, May 5. The park will also be open Friday and Saturday, May 11 and 12 and daily operation begins Wednesday, May 16. Gates open at 10:30 a.m. and rides begin at 11:00 a.m.
