Pigeon Forge, TN -- Dollywood's 2004 season gets under way on April 3 with the park's annual grand opening festivities. Dollywood's 19th season features the debut of the park's new Thunderhead wooden roller coaster.
The $7 million Thunderhead roller coaster is the park's newest adventure ride.
Designed and constructed by Great Coasters International, Thunderhead takes passengers on a thrilling 3,230-foot long ride featuring a 100-foot drop and a top speed of 55 mph. Thunderhead's track includes 22 turns and crosses over and under itself 32 times. The ride also features the world's first "fly through" station where the coaster actually races through the loading station at 40 mph on a track located only eight feet above the exit platform where guests are waiting to board.
