It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood, can you say ride your butt off, I knew you could! Arrive at Kennywood around 12:15 and the place had maybe 30 cars. Get out and head over to the entrance gates, 6 window lines 5 to 6 people in each so after arguing with Ripples we decided the last one. The pay windows opened at 12:35 I was in the park 12:36. I bolted for Jackrabbit, got in line nobody else in line. The ride ops were going over last minute things. I can now be considered the very first general public person to enter Jackrabbit for this season and the next century, it took Ripples 10 minutes to calm me down, I was in tears and pics to prove it hehe! The coaster ran sluggish pretty much all day, the double drop still gave plenty air but this old fella needs a few days to break in those old bones. Yes Jersey Joe I rode the back seat in fact 8 times to be exact. Walked over to the new Hawk 48, I am not a fan of spin rides but this is one that looks interesting, more about that later. I do think Kennywood has a hit on thier hands! Got to T'Bolt, no line heard the ride op ask for a single so I was there. I dont know what they did but this ride flew, no top brake on the train seemd to drop out of the sky, I got major air on the uphill over the station, never before. The other brake over the station was hardly on, T'Bolt flew all day like this. Steel Phantom, I feel sick over this ride being replaced, if they could only reprofile it and remover the loops, god the first 2 drops are sensational. I dont think they had the brake on neither today, I never get banged around anyway. Got plenty of pics of the ride including land shots near the T'Bolt and the SP drop, to look over. In genearl the park was DEAD, I havent KP this dead since the late 70's. Of course preview day is slow. Total ride count: Jackrabbit 15, T'Bolt 6, Steel Phantom 14. Racer was closed. Most of the rides were open so for $12 god what a deal. Now for the best part, Ripples started today, complaining that he wanted to ride the new ride, I sat there and told him NO 100 hundred times he wouldnt stop so I gave in a went on. The seats are great and very very comfortable, the shoulder harness are the best around. I sat facing left on the inside. The floor drops then we swung forward the backwards then forward and backwards when all of a sudden all hell breaks loose, after the 3rd time around I was saying oh well I am here might as well enjoy it. To me a great ride, like going on an invert without a track. Again KP has a winner on their hands, will I do it again not on your life brother! There were added improvements to the park, sidewalks, bathrooms etc. All in all a great sunny warm day. Now it is time for me to crash. Patripman

p.man,i was under the impression you disliked the phantom, when they announced it would be removed you seemed kina glad.awhile back you said you bet the hawk would not last for more than 2 seasons or so,do you still feel that way?

And What A Beautiful Day It Was! by Jenni at 4/17/00 9:28:37 AM

Glad you had such a great day PAtripman... It was nice to meet you (and Ripples of course) after the ride on the Steel Phantom! (I'm one half of the couple you spoke with at the pizza pavilion)You are so right though, we couldnt have asked for a better opening day, and the 12 bucks was a STEAL! Everything looked great, staff was doing a great job with everything, nice light crowd made every coaster a virtual walk on. It was a wonderful day!

PATripMan (and Ripples, of course): I look forward to Knoebel's and your famous instructions on the flying scooters :)

Sounds awesome. Really no brakes at the top?? I would think the laterals must've been great. When you say major air over the station, you mean just before (or going into) the 2nd to last drop?? (I always thought that spot was a bit slow..)

My favorite photo spot is the front seat of the Thunderbolt, just a second after you leave the station.. I caught a train going down the 'Phantom's second drop, and it is a great shot. Anyway sounds like a great day at Kennywood I just wish i was there. -ben

Being that Jenni is my better half, I agree, it was good to ride the Steel Phantom sitting a few seats back from Ripples and then having a nice convo on the future of KP with Patripman :)

Hope to run into the both of them again sometime soon :)
