Hello,

My name is Pravin Jegan. I am in the EXPAND program at school and I am doing a project on rollercoaster. I have few questions on rollercoaster. I am looking for rollercoaster expert to answer my questions.

My questions are:
1. How do the carts stay on the tracks when it goes upside down?
2. Why do your tummy feel weird when the cart goes down from the very top?

Please help me to find answers for these questions.

Thank you,
Pravin

Roller coasters usually have 3 sets of wheels that hold them onto the track. They have the wheels on top- called the running wheels. There are wheels on the side- either inside or outside of the track, depending on how it's shaped, called guide wheels to help steer the train. And there are wheels on the bottom that hold it on, called upstop wheels (because they "stop" the train from going "up" off the track)

You can see it and a description at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roller_coaster_wheel_assembly

and even more details at http://www.coaster101.com/2011/10/24/coasters-101-wheel-design/

2. Why do your tummy feel weird when the cart goes down from the very top?

Check out http://science.howstuffworks.com/engineering/structural/roller-coaster5.htm
and the next page on that site. They may help to explain that answer for you.

Not everyone's stomach will feel weird- mine almost never bothers me on a roller coaster for example, but others notice it. It's because the forces affect different people in different ways.

Please help me to find answers for these questions.

Thank you,
Pravin

Hope my answers and those links will help you in your project. good luck!
