SF Great Adventure Opening Weekend Trip Report 3-24-13

My knee scooter and I arrived at SFGadv at 10:20am on Sunday and met Judy and Mike. It was chilly but tolerable. Judy and Mike said there was something they had to tell me but they weren’t sure they should and then I see this over by the ticket booth window:

Oh HELL NO! I don’t think so.

I have been having a HORRIBLE week – actually a horrible few months since my ankle surgery. This was NOT happening on my watch. The girl at the booth said it was due to the weather – huh? It was a little cold with mild winds but nothing compared to yesterday. I was in complete denial. Didn't make sense. Now yesterday there were 35-40 mph wind gusts down here so I was hoping it was left from yesterday. We then went to guest relations where Mike and I opted for the meal plan and I got a handicap access pass (which we really never even needed).

We went right to season pass processing that had no line but they screwed up Mike’s pass so we had a slight delay. All was well and we went on Green Lantern as our first coaster of the season and Judy’s 276th coaster. Was a walk on (as pretty much everything was) and we got in the front row line. And then I saw the most beautiful sight: KK was running trains!!! Thank GOD! Chilly ride on GL but a good one – they had the trims off which was nice. Seemed smoother to me as well. It really is one of the better stand-ups.

We went straight for KK (naturally) and there was only a line for the front, which I was waiting for. He was having some computer issues so we had a slight delay. Was up and running in about 10 minutes but only one train was on the track. I finally got my launch and all was well in the world once again! My man wouldn’t let me down with the week I’ve been having. He DOES care after all! :-)

Judy returning from her launch. Looks like the front of the train got a nice makeover.

I then got my delectable Mexican pastry and a refill cup, which are getting smaller and smaller each year by the way. They almost fall through the old cup holders now!

My life was exponentially getting better while Mike’s was getting worse (and Judy’s too actually). ET was down. Nothing. Nada.

Mike mourning no ET

We went over to Medusa (Bizarro) and the second most beautiful sight of the day was to be seen:

They took out the audio and put the seats back in! YAY! Whoo-hoo!

Finally, someone listened to all my bitching on EVERY survey I’ve ever filled out over the past few years! It was glorious! We all could ride together in the back in silent harmony. Great ride as usual and those flames felt nice. We poached a seat for a second ride and the family I was sitting next to in the last row pitched a fit when their little boy (probably around 7) started complaining the restraint was too tight and he couldn’t breathe. His mother started screaming at the ride-op and she explained that they would have to put the floor back up and evacuate the entire train and re-do the loading procedure if it was really a problem (it wasn’t – he was being a brat). She’s still yelling at her to just open his seat and I tell her there are certain procedures they HAVE to follow for things like this and it’s her second day on the job – give her a break. After a good 5 minutes of this the kid says he’s fine (he always was) then the mother starts yelling at the kid saying now they’re the idiots who held the entire train up – must be nice to be in that family….

We see ET testing trains at this point but they had the water dummies on them. At least that’s a positive sign. We head to Runaway Train and took a ride then went to grab lunch. We then hit Sky Screamer – only a one ride wait and it was a nice ride but they really need to get a few other songs in there. I have nothing against Thunderstruck from AC/DC, I actually like that song, but for EVERY ride? I’ll have to make that my next complaint, LOL. We have to come up with a play list of up-tempo rock songs for them. Flying High Again by Ozzy and Wheel in the Sky by Journey are two that come to mind that would work. Still saw water dummies on ET while flying around. They were running them for a very long time. Look over at Nitro and see there’s nothing running. Uh-oh. That’s not good.

Batman TR was going so we hopped on a literal NO LINE wait with only one train running. Crazy! The sound effects are back in the queue area as well. Those forces are so intense and I felt it in my feet again. Thought it was cool during the ride but then as I got off my ankle started to hurt – must have been from the pressure. Damn you G forces! It subsided after a while but Nitro was still not up.

Batman

We went to go on Skull Mountain through the handicap entrance since I didn’t feel like locking up the scooter but you apparently have to go to the front to get it signed first. For anyone that is unfamiliar with the set up the entrance and exit are NO WHERE close to each other and there was NO LINE! NO ONE waiting at all at the gates to board. We were pissed. Mike ended up watching the scooter and Judy and I went on the regular way. Took the last row and it was a decent ride – actually got some air time. They still had the fright fest glowing items and sound effects going – perhaps they’ll keep them. Good idea if they do. Definitely adds to the ride.

We went back to Nitro and I walked under by the ride-op booth where I met this wonderful security guard, whose name I won’t mention because she could get in trouble, and she said they were working on a sensor (actually gave a good amount of detail) and it should be up in about 30 minutes or so. She also said not to tell anyone she told me that, LOL. Judy had a long ride home and it was around 3 pm. Despite my pleas of “it will open!” she decided to leave. I felt so bad – how do you drive that far and not go on either ET or Nitro? We said our goodbyes and Mike and I started heading back to the other side. We were going to take another launch on KK but low and behold there were people on ET! YAY! So guess where we went? I did use my handicap pass for this one – there was actually a line and only one train operating. We went for the back row which had a much longer line than usual. I think we all better shut up about how great the back is – word is obviously getting out. Took about 25 minutes before we boarded with the one train and no one fitting (but the ride ops were at least trying to staple in people and mostly successful, unlike last opening day). It was a really good ride. The day was almost complete.

ET's first drop as viewed by the handicapped entrance in the back

We then crossed our fingers and headed back to Nitro – praying our security guard friend was right. When we first approached there was nothing and then there it was – a beautiful train going up the lift hill with people on it! YAY! Ran into our friend again too – she’s awesome and I hope whenever there’s a problem I can find her – she’s is definitely one to be trusted! There was no line and we headed for the back. I thought it was running a bit sluggish and it was getting cold – my face was frozen! Still wouldn’t have missed it for the world. We both poached another seat on the next train. I was in the second row and I actually thought it was a better ride than the back row on the last one. Maybe it was the train? Mike poached a third ride but I had enough. My body was aching and my face was cold.

Nitro

We then grabbed a slice of pizza that wasn’t half bad with our meal plan. We then parted ways around 5:45 pm. Mike went to get another ET ride (shocker!) and I went home.

Another thing worth mentioning was they changed the “visual scan” motion to what Mike rightly referred to as the Greased Lightnin' dance! It’s pretty stupid and makes no sense. I’ll let Mike and Judy (who wants me to make that the next complaint because it annoyed the hell out of here, lol) elaborate more on that one.

Some other complaints I've given throughout the years were also partially addressed: There are now mirrors in some of the restrooms and they now have the back door open so you can cut through from the ET side to get to the KK side through the animal exhibits (used to be a one-way).

It was a MUCH better day than I had anticipated. I was pretty comfortable weather-wise through most of the day - was sunny in the morning and afternoon with hardly any wind by noon but the clouds rolled in around 3 - 4 pm and it started to cool down dramatically (had on 4 layers of clothes). The ride ops were MUCH more prepared than they were last year (saw a few familiar faces from last year as well) and were all very pleasant and friendly. There was hardly anyone in the park and we got to ride everything we wanted to (except poor Judy). I got a launch, a Churro, a noise-free blissful ride on Medusa and was relatively pain free for most of the day considering my condition. Best opening day in a long time with good people to share it with. I hope that’s a sign that it’s going to be a good year!

Journey? Give me a damn break! How about Steve Miller's Fly Like An Eagle?

The visual scan now is sweeping an arm in a half-circle, palm down. I hadn't known Jen was a fan of Grease, and she picked up my reference immediately.

Well, yeah..Green Lantern was my first coaster ride of the year...in Jersey. My actual first was ROAR, of all things, on Saturday. I can't really elaborate much on SFA's Opening Day, as I'm at work and my home comp is on the fritz. Perhaps Paul or Judy will.

Didn't get that second ride on Toro. Looked to be about a 40-45 minute wait, and..not having a TIVO or working VCR..I had to get home for Walking Dead. Besides, I could no longer feel my fingers. My hands were the only part of me that was really cold though. Several co-workers commented on how red my face and (especially) my bald head were. The sun was out all day in Maryland, but it's mostly wind-burn. Worst thing in MD was that Supes, my second favorite steel ride, never opened. And it took me six damn hours to get down there due to construction in Delaware. But the company was good, and the Wild One rides were excellent.

Nice tr! And that's wonderful news about the back row of bizarro going back to 4 seats instead of 2 seats and 2 speakers. I hope it is like that for their other trains and not just that one train.

There were 4 seats in the last row of both trains they had running - the sound is definitely GONE! *streamers and balloons fall from the sky* :-)

Here is a pic I took of the other train that dispatched while we were waiting on line:

No, unfortunately. I didn't notice anything but it was getting dark/cloudy and we walked right on. I'm sure I would have noticed a paint job though...

Fantastic TR, Jen. Wish I could have joined you guys. Assuming it doesn't snow, I guess I have a lot to look forward to next week :)

Paul

PS
More complaining if you can keep getting positive change like the KK path reopening and the sound system booted from Medusa. I suggest working on Dark Knight! :)

We all wish you were there too! So far looks like the weather will be warmer but right now there's a chance of rain - which will probably change 50 times between now and then.

It was funny because they have an otter show now over by the pool stadium near KK and at the end they let you pose for pictures with them but our timing was off whenever we passed it and kept missing it. Mike then said "You'll be here with Paul on Monday" and I laughed and said "Do you honestly think Paul would even let me pause to take a picture with an otter never mind sit through a show at an amusement park?" I was laughing and thinking you're going to be on line before I can lock the damn scooter to something, LOL! You are a man on a mission when you're at a park, I'll give you that!

While I will be one of the few women that will admit bitching to get your way is an art form that takes years of practice that I've mastered pretty well, I don't have super powers! LOL! Maybe my request for a drop tower or Huss Frisbee can replace it? That's the best I can do! :-)

Maybe add laser guns on dark krap and have it be similar to the rollercoaster scene from zombieland let riders shoot their blasters while in the coaster.:)

YUM. But why not just re-theme the whole damn thing to Walking Dead?

My name is donna, nice to meet you jennifer. Is there an unwritten rule about which theme parks some one is allowed to talk about. What if someone does not have the financial resources to travel abroad to other theme parks? Does that make the person dull or uninteresting to talk to? Does that make one any less of a true coaster enthusiasts?

Donna,

Nope - not at all to to your last 2 questions. Most of us don't travel outside the US to other parks (although we wish we could) but most of us either can't afford that or when we do travel we go to places without amusement parks. The last few places I've been outside the US were the Dominican Republic, South Africa, Egypt and the Galapagos Islands/Ecuador and the only coaster I rode/found was an indoor one in a casino in South Africa after we stayed the night at the hotel before we left for our adventure. Most vacation destinations don't have amusement parks, unfortunately.

You can talk about any US park in this forum, no matter how big or how small. As you can see we even talk about boardwalk rides sometimes. There's a separate forum for parks in Europe but people sometimes post them on here too. There are people on here from all walks of life and those that have only been to a few parks to those that travel extensively all around the US to ride everything.

Welcome and nice to meet you too.

Jennifer

perhaps they could've tried to get another premier coaster at the park,...but who knows? Maybe the park had such a bad experience with b&r that they won't go back with them? I mean six flags could've gotten another premier coaster for cheap like the speed coaster from the closed Sahara resort from Las Vegas and build it here. But too late as it is going to be rebuilt close to where the Mandalay bay is.
