Seaside Heights, NJ TR:

Since they are going to be removing the coaster from the ocean next week I wanted to get down there this week. I finally made it there yesterday (Friday). I got there around 12:30 pm. The trip there was uneventful – I took the Parkway to route 37 and there was no traffic or major destruction to be seen. I know that would have been different had I taken route 35 through Mantoloking and Ortley Beach so I did that on purpose (it gets me so upset). As I drove through the back roads towards the boardwalk area I was pleasantly surprised to see it was cleaned up nicely and no major destruction could be detected, at least not on the streets I was on. Some places had windows boarded up and debris in the yards but that was about all I saw. As I started down Ocean Avenue (road that runs next to the boardwalk) there was police tape blocking the entrances to the beach/boardwalk with a cop sitting in between every ramp. I finally passed an empty ramp with no tape one block left of the Midway so I parked and got out. I made my way onto what used to be the boardwalk.

This area leading up to the boardwalk was NOT filled with sand prior to Sandy

The first thing I noticed was the Midway. BEST cheese fries ever! It was standing there in the middle of nothingness. While I was glad it survived it was bizarre just sitting in the middle of sand.

Out on the beach I look to my left and I can see the flag on top of the Jet Star roller coaster peering out from behind what’s left of Casino Pier.

I look to my right and I see the Ferris Wheel and remains of Fun Town pier.

I look around at what used to be this place where I had so much fun growing up. Partying until all hours of the night, hanging out on the boardwalk, getting in trouble, LOL. Some of the best memories I have were here and it was just gone. I was extremely sad.

Then I turned to the ocean and watched the waves and the gulls and thought how if I only look in this direction, everything is so beautiful.

But if I turn right, left or behind me it’s horrific. Talk about a Ying/Yang moment.

I walked towards Fun Town Pier first and on the way found this perfect, little purple scallop shell. I picked it up and admired it – thinking it was some sort of sign that things will be OK eventually. I put it in my pocket and continued on. I got fairly close to the pier taking pictures with no one bothering me.

Fun Town Pier

Fun Town Pier

How the hell is this standing? The pier underneath went out from under it and one side is in the sand and the other caught on a pillar. Crazy.

Then a construction worker motioned me to get off the beach so I walked back towards Casino Pier.

Casino Pier

Boardwalk remains in front and to the left of Casino Pier

I was almost there when I hear a megaphone “Ma’am – please get off the beach”. Damn cops! So I walked over to his truck and said I didn’t know we weren’t allowed on it. He said that no one is allowed on the beach because they’re starting to construct the boardwalk. I said no problem and he told me to have a nice day. I do have to mention I was hoping to get arrested because he was one BEAUTIFUL man. :-) So I began to walk on the street, looking up each ramp to see if I would be allowed up but there were police cars in all of them with yellow crime scene tape blocking the entrances. I really just wanted a glimpse of the Jet Star. As I was crossing the street I met an older couple who said they were told this cheese steak place was open. We pulled on the doors and they opened so we went upstairs to the boardwalk level. There were two workers in there making pies (pizza, not desert!) for the workers but they were not open for business. The side doors were closed (they’re like garage doors with windows) so we asked if we could just look outside and take pictures. It was right in front of the Jet Star. The gentleman said sure, no problem. So as I was trying to position my camera to get a picture without any window frame in it he comes over, unlocks the bottom and opens up the door. He said don’t go out too far – stay over here and go and get you pictures. He was absolutely awesome. I wanted to buy something but he said he couldn’t sell anything. I tried to give him money but he wouldn’t take it. So I need to get a butt load of people together for lunch one day because I owe them!!
Here’s the now infamous soon to be removed Jet Star:

I didn't realize how close to the shore it was

Coaster and what's left of Casino Pier

Other side of Casino Pier and the Sky Ride cable

We thanked him a million times and left. I walked back to my car and went on my way. There were people working everywhere, on utility poles, in businesses, delivering goods, cleaning up, it was promising. I still don't think there's a snowball's chance in hell that the Boardwalk will be ready by April. Perhaps Memorial Day.

As I looked at that water tower on my way back to the car I thought I’ll be back and so will you! :-)

Star Jet...not Jet Star (I'm PRETTY sure)

EDIT...yeah, THIS: http://rcdb.com/1477.htm

The Jet Star ran through 2000, and was replaced by Star Jet in 2002. What I DIDN'T know was the Jet Star was originally at Palisades Park before it went to Casino Pier. So I may have rode it there, too.

Great stuff, Jen.

edit: OK - I found it called the Star Jet in a few articles but everyone around here called it the Jet Star - even before it was in the ocean.

Did you see my edit? I don't care if it's real name is the "Star Jet" - EVERYONE called it the Jet Star. From the time I was a teenager until this past summer. It's the same thing as me calling the Enterprise the Enterprise even when it was the Spin Meister. The old name sticks forever. I always knew it as the Jet Star and that's what I'll call it until the end dammit! And apparently a lot of people agree with me judging by the hundreds of articles. We are SO gonna fight!!

Jen

Re: Seaside Heights TR 3-1-13 by beastmaster beastmaster Profile at 3/2/13 7:15:49 PM
Bad analogy, in my book. Enterprise/Spin Meister was the SAME ride, renamed. Jet Star was removed and replaced by Star Jet. Similar rides? Of Course. Same ride? No.

But we can agree to disagree, or else it'll be even colder than temps indicate on the 23rd!! :)

EVERYONE who is familiar with it calls it the Jet Star. I have NEVER heard it referred to as the Star Jet. EVER. The funny thing is articles from amusement sites and such have it as the Star Jet - the local papers call it the Jet Star. That's for a reason. That's what the locals call it. Always have, always will.

Here is a GREAT description:
Jet Star Coaster - Palisades had a steel coaster called the Jet Star. The Jet Star went to Casino Pier in Seaside Heights, NJ when Palisades Park closed in 1971 and remained there until 2000, when it was deemed too old and torn down. A different coaster sits there now called the Star Jet, but almost everyone still calls it Jet Star.

And I'll close this thread (maybe) with this:

My only point was:

The Star Jet is in the ocean.

The Jet Star is not in the ocean.

Your last post validates my point.

Call it a tie. But I'll still buy you *A* churro.

Not to take sides...

But I believe the official name of this coaster is STAR JET. As Mike said, it replaced the Jet Star.

Knowing the GP to be ignorant of such things most of the time, it makes sense that everyone still called it the Jet Star. I imagine most people didn't know the difference

I guess that kind makes you both right... right?

Anyway, very nice photos Jen. Your "trespassing" got you better photos than I got, especially of Funtown Pier.

Casino Pier looks like they're on track to re-open a portion of the pier (not over the water) this summer.

I would imagine that whoever was contracted to remove STAR JET from the ocean might also demo the portion of the pier over the water. I'm sure it needs to come down, and they'll likely have to do it before swimmers start showing up.

Funtown looks to be a year or so away, if at all. I've heard nothing of their plans to date. I guess time will tell.

I agree with you about he area showing promise. I was encouraged with what I saw. I don't doubt the boardwalk will be open by Memorial Day. Hopefully some of the rides are too.

I understand that on paper it is the Star Jet but when everyone in the area that has been going there since the beginning of time and the actual people who own it call it the Jet Star, it tilts the scales in my direction a bit!

Anyway, very nice photos Jen. Your "trespassing" got you better photos than I got, especially of Funtown Pier.

I really didn't know I was trespassing at first - I thought the construction guy who told me to move was becasue they were working in the area. Wasn't until the cop told me to get off the beach that I knew I was in touble, LOL!

Casino Pier looks like they're on track to re-open a portion of the pier (not over the water) this summer.

They will be opening on Memorial Day - the lower pier, that is.

They're not opening until summer 2014.

Originally they were saying mid-April but last I heard they are now starting to say May. I just hope they can get it done on time. Those businesses have taken such a hit that they need the tourism badly.

I saw this on Casino Pier's FB page and had to post it:

Original question:
Jet Star or Star Jet? Friendly debate going on over at Rebuild Seaside Heights, New Jersey and some claim it to be called the Star Jet (renamed after it was rebuilt).

So which is it? :)

Answer by Casino Pier:
We accept both . Technically on paper the coaster is called the Star Jet. Here's the story...the Jet Star was the name of the coaster that occupied the same area in the past. It was replaced by another coaster in 2002 that we named the Star Jet. In doing so, our plan was to reverse the two names on the rides light-up sign. The confusion was created by the staff and former patrons. We were all used to calling the former coaster the Jet Star so when the new coaster was assembled, we still continued calling it by its original name. No one really transitioned over to the new name. Which is why we accept either name.

Good luck settling your debate . FYI shortly before the hurricane, we were considering changing the official name back to the Jet Star!

Or whether Dark Knight should continue to exist.

Blackbeard=Junior coaster
Road Runner Railway=Kiddie Coaster

That is all.

I got a response from GAdv:

My question: Can you please settle a dispute? Is Blackbeard considered a children's/kiddie coaster or a junior coaster?

Response from Gadv:

Blackbeard is considered a family coaster because adults can also ride it with their young children.

The response made me laugh because they clearly insinuated that adults should only be riding it with their children, LOL.

The dispute shall continue.....

I had a hunch that is what their answer would be as that is what it is described as by various ride sale sites. While not the answer we were looking for, IT IS NOT A "KIDDIE" COASTER!!

Been going here for MANY years and I assure you it is the Star Jet sitting in the ocean. The Jet Star (originally in Palisades Amusement Park) was there before the Star Jet.
