Seaside Heights Photo Tour - 2/25/13

When I recently heard that Casino Pier's Star Jet roller coaster was soon to be removed from the water, I decided that it was now or never to make it over to Seaside to take it all in. I love roller coasters, and I love the ocean. This odd mix of the two was something that I just felt I needed to see with my own eyes. It was quite a sight - like seeing a celebrity. Oddly enough, this was my first ever visit to Seaside Heights. I don't live terribly far away, but I've always been a Wildwood guy. I've never journeyed up the Jersey Shore further than Atlantic City. If there was one word that came to mind as I toured the ocean front, it was "encouraged". The progress that has been made since October is certainly encouraging. I took a number of photos, most of which are posted to Facebook. I thought I share a few with the URC community as well. Funtown Pier really got hammered - sideswiped, if you will, by the ocean. Not a lot of movement on this pier, to be honest.
Here the old will meet the new. I'd estimate that about 75% of the boardwalk is gone right now. There are two small sections, like this one in front of Casino Pier, that are still in tact. The rest is being replaced.
Clean-up work takes place on Casino Pier
Casino Pier is storing their salvageable rides in a parking lot across the street - including the Wild Mouse.
A view looking south and a view looking north. As you can see, there is no boardwalk to speak of at the moment. It's completely gone - soon to be replaced.
Here is the star of the show. It was so cool to see it in person. This image has really become somewhat iconic.
A wider angle - kind'a lends perspective to where this thing is sitting.
I think the seagulls actually dig it. There were all over it.
Work is taking place to rebuild the boardwalk. As you can see, there have been a good number of piles driven into the sand. I'm sure the top will be added very soon to this section of boardwalk. Like I said, there are more online. Check them out when you get a moment. I'm happy to answer whatever questions I can too.

Loved the pics, I've never been up there so it's cool to see this.

Drachen, can you share a bit about your experience down there? How restrictive was it, where were you allowed to go, police presence, etc. I'd still like to get down, but I can only go on a weekend at this point, and it hasn't happened.
Access to the island is wide open. You can come and go as you please. I didn't pay for parking at all either. I simply parked on the street, next to the water park in front of Casino Pier.
I only saw one place that was offering boardwalk "view" access. There is police tape and large piles of sand blocking access to the beach and boardwalk ramps. There were fair amount of police, both local and state troopers, patrolling the streets (in car) in front of the boardwalk. I wouldn't cross any tape, if I were you.
Having said that, about one block north of Casino Pier, (near the black roofed Henna Tattoo shop, some of the tape was pulled down (either by an owner or by trespassers - I don't know). That's where I accessed the beach.
It was a few steps up to the boardwalk level, and then a step down onto the built-up sand and on to the beach. There were a number of people in this spot, on the sand and taking pictures like me - enough that I didn't feel like I was in the wrong.
There looks to be some beach access south of the boardwalk too - about 100 yards south of Funtown Pier. I'm sure there's easier, but less photographic beach access north of the boardwalk too. I suppose if you access the beach in either of these spots and walk down to the rides, no one will stop you.
Like I said, I'm glad I went to see this in person. I'll surely be back during the summer, to see how things turned out.
If you hope to see the coaster in the water, and if weekends are your only free days of the week, then I would make a point to get there this weekend. I think the coaster is coming out next week.

Thanks for the reply. If Saturday's weather holds, I might take a spin down. I also read about a Jewish deli in Toms River I hadn't known about. Pastrami and a coaster in the ocean..nice combination!
If you go, give me the name of the deli, and let me know what you think. I love me a good NY style deli.
