Post-Sandy Seaside Heights, NJ...Piers Likely Be Rebuilt?

With Casino Pier (Seaside Heights) and Funtown Pier (Seaside Park) being destroyed by hurricane Sandy, is it likely they will be rebuilt and the damaged/destroyed coasters (Star Jet, Looping Coaster, Wild Mouse, Mighty Mouse) repaired or replaced??? I hope at least the Star Jet is replaced with a new identical one, because I've been wanting to ride it for so long, but never had a chance to due to my financial issues.

I hope the piers and boardwalk are rebuilt in some form..they've been a part of my life for a loooooong time. I probably have as many specific memories of Seaside as any place I've ever been.

I don't think the ride sitting in the ocean is the same ride I grew up with, but the Jet Star that was in that same spot from the late 60's through, maybe the 80's, was one of my first coasters. It was also one of the few my Dad took me on prior to his passing in 1977. My dad had a bad leg, and I remember him having difficulty positioning it in the toboggan-style car.

Here's the one I'm referring to, which opened in 1972 (so I was off by a few years), the summer before I turned 8 years old. It closed in 2000. You'll see, same spot.

As I've mentioned before, I haven't rode anything other than a carousel on the Seaside boards in many years, due to that fact that..at most times..they require tickets. And I'm not spending 6 or 7 dollars to ride somewhat mediocre rides.

I got lost there as a kid, I took my first serious girlfriend there, went to my first waterpark (Rainbow Rapids)..so many memories. The Seaside Boardwalk was always one of my favorite places.

I can only hope it will be again.

So far everyone from Point Pleasant to Seaside from the bars to the piers have said they will rebuild and be ready for next year. No specifics on rides that will be rebuilt but that coaster off Casino Pier looks like it could literally be pulled out of the ocean and placed back on the pier - it's still intact. I'm sure the ocean water has wrecked havoc on the metal though...

Since that coaster appears to still be intact, I imagine it could be disassembled, with each part being examined and all damaged parts replaced before it can be put back up again. The company that manufactured that coaster (Miler) is still in business and still makes that particular model, according to their website (http://www.miler-ind.com). As you can see on their site, the Star Jet in Seaside Heights is their home page photo!

I think these coasters are headed for the scrap yard, unfortunately. I would imagine that each pier will inspect the steel to see if it's salvageable. I think they will find, judging by the photos, that the rides have been mangled beyond repair.

Depending on the type of insurance the parks carry, I would imagine that the rebuilding of the piers and replacement of some of the rides will be mostly paid for.

That's not to say that these little, portable rides will be replaced with Zac Spins or something to that regard. The piers will receive a check for the assessed damages and most current values of the rides, and they can spend accordingly.

They will either use that money to simply re-open as soon as possible, or they can use the insurance money as part of a re-branding of sorts - part of a larger project.

Or the owner can take the insurance money and close down, which they are entitled to do.

I would imagine that any pier replacement would need to be something more solid to avoid this happening again. Something with concrete piles. Either way, it may be hard to find operating rides in Seaside Heights in 2013.

I have a feeling that the damage to the coasters are a lot worse than they appear. Hopefully not, but we can't see what lies beneath the water.

From these and other photos I've seen, the Wild Mouse coasters on both piers appear to be intact and undamaged, along with the Ferris wheel, Tower Of Fear and Skycoaster on Funtown Pier.

Some new pictures.

So much for "intact."

On a personal note, I'm OK, but still without power. I had to throw away two packages of bacon this morning, as well as a whole pizza. Ouch. I'm at work, and I MAY be able to make it home tonight on the tiny bit of gas I have. I found two open stations today and couldn't find the end of the line at either one..hundreds of cars deep. And that's not including the dozens on foot waiting with gas cans.

Hershey will be open this weekend, with $5 of every ticket going to the Red Cross. Anyone wanna pick me up? :)

I'm afraid that roller coaster probably won't be able to make it, you never know though, if they spend time and money on it, they can fixed the damaged parts/ replace them with new parts.I think the best thing to do would be to replace it with a new coaster, and fix the area where the debris is.

Hate to say it, but that coaster is done. Unlike the SFNO rides, there is the physical act of destroying the pier it was sitting on. That is not a gentle act so the structure has likely been compromised. It will cost millions to restore the integrity of the structure, besides the cost of fishing it out of the water. I doubt the insurance will bring in the money needed to repair/replace the damaged structure and I'm sure the owners will think "why spend all this money on this ride when we can go out and get a new one for roughly the same cost?"

Unless ACE or Miler is going to pony up the cost to replace the ride, when/if the pier gets back on its feet, there will be a new coaster to replace that one.

I heard on the radio about two days ago that the owner plans on re-building the peir , and having it re-opened by summer 2013 :).

Everyone down here is saying that - doubt it will happen though. They are still limiting access for homeowners, some still haven't been able to see their homes, never mind a boardwalk pier operation. It may be open by the summer but I wouldn't expect much in terms of rides in the immediate future. They have to actually re-build the boardwalk and pier before anything else and it doesn't look like that will happen anytime soon. Too much personal property destruction needs to be addressed first - people need a place to live before people need a few rides. It's still really bad down here. :-(

I agree, but otoh, you do need the tourist spots repaired so that people outside of the city/town will come and infuse the area with some much needed revenue. I think fixing the boardwalk and businesses is just as important as rebuilding destroyed homes.
