Leap the Dips

I was in State College this past week and Altoona with its Lakemont Park is only an hour away. I actually found it by using the Theme Park search area of Ultimate Rollercoasters. When I saw the "The oldest roller coaster in the world", bit I knew I would be headed to Altoona. I hold ACE membership from time to time and of course they are all about these venerable old ladies. Riding Leap the Dips was a hoot.

It was "dollar days" on the day I went so an all day ride pass was only $5, however Leap the Dips is not included and has a $2.50 per ride fare. I paid my fare as their first rider of the day. I learned the Leap the Dips had been built on that spot and was not moved there as a reclamation project. They had to find an employee to ride with me in the cars with two seats and room for four to give extra weight. It worked like a flume ride minus the water and with wheels on the bottom and sides of the car. After being lifted to the top of the hill by a chain lift, the car rolled gently through the figure 8 course which had occasional dips. No dips were leaped. At one point my host rider reached out and began pulling us along to add speed. I asked if I should paddle also. It was so funny. I imagine that back in the day Leap the Dips had an hour long line.

Lakemont Park had a couple of other coasters, Skyliner being the the best. Its still an old woody and gave some nice air off the big hill when seated in the back. There is also Toboggan which is one of those smaller coasters by Chance Rides, Inc. which sends you up the middle of the tube then the track wraps around the outside to bring you back. I guess that counts as a roller coaster credit.

I was also there first thing on Friday 26Aug. I was waiting in line for the park to open. I only stayed about 2 hours.

We were there at the same time. We got into the park at 11:10 and stayed until 3:00. Sorry we missed you. It would have been cool to meet up. I posted a photo of the kids on Leap The Dips on my TR. Maybe you seen us there. Out of curiosity did the blonde girl who was operating Skyliner have an attitude problem? She didn't seem very happy with the fact that we kept riding.

There is no physical thrill, so to speak, in riding Leap the Dips. But there is a real mental/emotional thrill in riding such an old ride. There's nothing like it anywhere else.

Skyliner is a reall good ride, and as you said, it's best in the back.

Lakemont is one of those parks that should be on every park/coaster fan's to-do list. It's a must.

Me and drachen hit coaster 250 on the same day and had an unexpected park closure on the same trip. Me and you where at Lakemont for the first time on the same day. What's the chances on that happening? It's a strange chain of concurring events.

250?! Man I hope to hit that mark someday. I'm at 84 :( but that is very strange that you guys both hit that mark on the same day. Crazy.

Still tentative, but I think somehow I haven't rode SFA's junior coaster. I'm not sure if I did. It's my birthday weekend. I'm meeting my friends for KD Saturday, then heading north Sunday with a stop at SFA. I'll only ride that coaster if A, I fit, and B, I can ride without a kid. My main goal is multiple rides on Supes.
